Issues during Recovery after Dental Treatment

You may wonder how to deal with the post-surgery scenario after dental work. The matter of fact is that things can go wrong if you don’t take care of your oral health after surgery. Even if you are careful, things can still go south. A few things that you need to take into consideration in this regard are worth mentioning.

Bleeding and infection

You can expect some pain after surgery. However, if the pain persists or worsens after three days of surgery, you have got an infection on the surgery site to deal with. The first thing that you should do in this regard is to contact your dentist and tell him about the pain and discomfort. Another type of infection which can occur in this regard is osteomyelitis. It is mainly a bone infection and it can result in a lot of pain in the jaw. A spike of fever is the major sign that you have this infection.

Excessive bleeding is also something you need to be cautious about. Although it is normal to have bleeding after surgery, you need to immediately call your dentist if it doesn’t stop even after a few hours of surgery. They may have to do a little stitching to seal the wound in order to stop the bleeding.

Residual pain

Residual pain after the treatment is normal and you don’t need to worry about it. You will just have to control it with the help of medication your dentist has prescribed. However, you have to make sure that you are not taking more doses of pain medication than what you are allowed for. The pain should go away with time. If you are prone to infections, your dentist may suggest you the use of antibiotics.

Resting is extremely important after dental treatment. You need to rest for at least 48 hours after the dental surgery. Having that said, you need to avoid participating in any strenuous physical activity because it can open the wound which is in the initial process of healing.

Follow Post treatment instructions

Following the instructions by your dentist or surgeon is extremely important after dental surgery. They are going to instruct you about medication, diet, oral hygiene and change of bandages. Since they have experience dealing with the complicated issues, they are going to instruct you about taking good care of your oral cavity.

Right after the surgery, it is generally not recommended to brush your teeth. Your dentist will tell you when you start brushing and flossing your teeth.
